But there are some more serious long-standing complaints about their design too: not least the accusation that (for a while) most of them seemed locked into a very specific pattern of abilities

If you need an extra hand for your pingers deck, you can definitely count on Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph

There might be something out there (Forbidden Knowledge, perhaps), but I'm not convinced
